Chapter 1

The opportunity

Don

Anne, Brin, and the rest of the team....today I am talking about something that's, well, honestly, right up my alley—data center modernization, but with a twist: cloud adjacency. Now, before you roll your eyes and think, "Here comes that hairbrained knucklehead with another tech talk," let me just say, this is a real opportunity for us to step up and be more than just the folks who sell hardware. I mean, after 45 years in IT, I've seen a lot of these big transformation projects. I have been a program manager for three large-scale datacenter build projects, and the one thing that always stands out is the need for a partner who doesn't just sell you stuff but helps you plan, execute, and, well, not lose sleep at night. If not us, who?

Don

So, are we prepared to step up? Can we bring more than just our technology experience to the table? I think so. We’ve got these large-scale data center project planning and execution teams—folks who’ve been in the trenches, who know what it takes to pull off a transformation at scale. And when it comes to cloud adjacency, we know the players—Equinix, Microsoft Azure, AWS, Google Cloud, and others. We can bring them to the table, not just as vendors, but as partners in the process.

Don

And it’s not just about knowing the tech. It’s about understanding how on-premises and public cloud interact, and how public cloud services fit into the customer’s environment. We’re talking about improving cost, performance, security, and future-proofing by leveraging the right mix of technologies. That’s the real opportunity here—helping customers not just keep up, but get ahead. It is more than an analysis of an on-premises or cloud model; it is about understanding the interactions between each and how the customer can leverage advances in technologies to improve their spend, security posture, and performance while positioning their business for the future.

Chapter 2

Are we in or out

Don

Now, here’s the big question: are we in or out? Are we ready to assemble an internal team to assess and develop a sales strategy for these data center modernization efforts? Because, let’s be honest, this isn’t just about selling a few racks of servers. It’s about being a trusted advisor, not just the beloved technology vendor who drops off, configures, and hands over the gear, then waves goodbye until a support call is opened.

Don

And, you know, involving Equinix in the design, cost, and planning for network modernization—that’s a must. Their network fabric, their proximity to the big cloud providers, it’s a game changer. But we have to ask ourselves, are we committed to being that trusted advisor? Or are we just gonna stay in our lane and let someone else take the lead?

Don

And, look, I’m not naïve. We have to ask, is the juice worth the squeeze? What’s in it for us? Well, if we do this right, we’re not just selling hardware—we’re building a long-term partnership, and that’s worth a lot more in the long run. However, it requires commitment and a willingness to take ownership of the outcome.

Chapter 3

Storage, Analytics, and AI Readiness

Don

Alright, let’s get into the nuts and bolts—storage, analytics, and AI readiness. So, here’s where we and Equinix shine. By deploying storage solutions either on-premises or in an Equinix data center, customers can create cost-effective, secure, and low-latency operations. We’re talking about block, object, and file storage arrays that can serve as a target for replication from on-prem or public cloud. And with Equinix’s cloud gateway (either on-premises or in an Equinix facility), proximity to AWS, Azure, and Google, you achieve sub-10 millisecond latency that makes a real difference for mission-critical workloads.

Don

Disaster recovery? No problem. Replicate your data to the cloud adjacent environment, use native snapshot functionality, and you’ve got a solid backup and DR strategy. It’s not just about ticking the compliance box—it’s about real resilience and business continuity. A question for Frank, Paul, and Kevin: Wouldn't it be nice to get the customer to follow our recommendations for data protection and business continuity?

Don

Now, let’s talk analytics and databases. Multi-cloud analytics and mission-critical databases greatly benefit from cloud adjacency. I mean, look at what companies like Costco and Nike are doing—moving their Oracle and SAS workloads closer to the cloud, but not in, because the performance isn’t there in the public cloud alone. With cloud adjacency, you get the best of both worlds: low latency, high performance, and the flexibility to move workloads as needed. Even between public cloud providers.

Don

And then there’s AI. Increasingly, customers are preparing their infrastructure to support internal AI as a service. This means building data centers that can handle the power and cooling demands of AI infrastructure, and ensuring the cloud adjacency strategy supports on-premises AI workloads. Did I see that the customer is placing ads for a nuclear reactor operator? Although this is a joke, it's not too far from the truth for the larger players in the AI space.

Don

It’s not just about having the right servers—it’s about making sure the facilities can handle the heat, literally and figuratively. I always say, if you’ve ever tried to retrofit a data center for high-density AI, you know it’s not as simple as just plugging in a few GPUs.

Chapter 4

Network Transformation and Security Innovations

Don

Now, let’s shift gears and talk about network transformation and security. The customer’s already working with Equinix, and they’re moving away from those old-school MPLS networks—if you remember those, you probably have a few gray hairs like me—in contrast, we're talking about shifting to software-defined connectivity using Equinix Fabric. This is a big deal. Instead of being locked into expensive, rigid circuits, you can now spin up connections on demand, directly to the cloud, with latency as low as 1 or 2 milliseconds. That’s, uh, basically the blink of an eye in network terms.

Don

The cost savings can be huge—up to 70% reduction in network expenses. I remember back in the '90s, working with MPLS, and it was always a headache to scale globally. You’d have to wait weeks, sometimes months, to provision a new circuit, and the costs just kept piling up. Now, with this new architecture, you can scale up or down as needed, and you’re not paying for bandwidth you don’t use. It’s a total game changer for global operations.

Don

Security’s another big win. With private interconnects and micro-segmentation, you can enforce policies centrally and keep your most critical data off the public internet. It’s not just about compliance—though that’s important—it’s about peace of mind. There’s a great example from an Equinix customer - Principled Technologies, who saw a 41% drop in application wait times and a 48% boost in order processing speed after moving to Equinix. That’s not just a small tweak—that’s a real, measurable impact on the business.

Don

And let’s not forget, the cost savings from network transformation in a large-scale network can be enough to fund many aspects of the overall transformation. That’s the kind of ROI that gets everyone’s attention.

Chapter 5

Cloud Adjacency and the Customer's Vision

Don

So, what exactly is cloud adjacency, and why does it matter? It’s about putting your services and data as close as possible to the cloud, but not necessarily in the cloud. Think of it like living next door to your favorite coffee shop instead of across town—you get all the benefits, but you keep control. For customers, this means they can keep sensitive workloads—such as AI training or payment systems—on private infrastructure, while still gaining lightning-fast access to public cloud data and compute, while maintaining access to those public cloud services that the development teams use when building applications.

Don

The customer’s goals here are pretty straightforward: cost savings, performance, and future-proofing. By leveraging cloud-adjacent solutions, such as those enabled by the Equinix cloud gateway, they can reduce network costs, enhance security, and ensure their infrastructure is prepared for whatever comes next. And, you know, I can’t help but think back to the early days of data center design. Back then, it was all about big, monolithic facilities, lots of fiber channel, and, honestly, a lot of guesswork. Today, with cloud adjacency, it’s a whole different ballgame. You get flexibility, scalability, and the ability to innovate without being locked into a single vendor or architecture.

Don

I might be rambling a bit, but the point is, cloud adjacency isn’t just a technical upgrade—it’s a strategic move that sets the stage for the next decade of IT. And if we do it right, we’re not just keeping up with the times—we’re helping define what comes next.

Chapter 6

Can we define the future with the customer?

Don

So, here’s where the rubber meets the road: are we in a position to help craft a 5-year strategic technology plan for the customer? Can we sell them on our team’s capabilities, not just as technologists, but as partners who understand their business and their goals?

Don

I mean, what does the future look like if we maintain the status quo? Probably a lot of missed opportunities, rising costs, and, honestly, a slow slide into irrelevance. However, if we partner with the customer to achieve project success—if we truly step up and own the outcome—we can help them modernize, innovate, and stay ahead of the curve.

Don

And, look, I know this isn’t easy. It requires commitment, expertise, and a willingness to challenge the status quo. But that’s what makes it exciting. That’s what makes it worth doing.

Don

Alright, that’s all I’ve got. Thanks for sticking with me—if you made it this far, you’re probably as passionate about this stuff as I am. I suggest that the next step is a meeting of the minds to discuss the opportunity and develop a sales strategy and approach to win the customer's trust with this project. And before I wrap, one last question - if not us, who?

Don

Full disclosure...I used AI to help develop the narrative for this Podcast. And although this may sound like me, it is a clone of my voice that was then used to deliver the narrative. Thanks for listening.
